This fact comes from the Digital Transformation in MENA 2022 report by checkout.com.

15,500 consumers were surveyed between 2020 and 2022 in order to identify trends in digital and ecommerce payments across the Middle East and North Africa. The latest findings include:

  • 88% of consumers in the region plan to maintain or increase their ecommerce spending into 2023
  • 91% of consumers now shop online, up from 87% in 2021
  • The Buy Now Pay Later market in MENA is expected to grow from $7 billion to $89 billion by 2030
This is a region which has long been associated with the primacy of cash. Cultural, historical and socio-economic forces have all been powerful drivers of the regional attachment to cash, and, even in the ecommerce era, to Cash on Delivery.
